Tattoo before & aftercare guide
Created by Mandi at Wrapped in Plastic INK, Costa Mesa, Orange County, CA.
Your tattoo is an investment, and how well it heals is a team effort. On my end I use hospital-grade disinfectants, single-use disposables, sterile needle cartridges, and careful technique to give you the best possible foundation.
On your end, how you care for your tattoo during healing is just as important as what happens in the studio. Skipping steps or not following aftercare instructions can affect your lines, color, and longevity.
This guide covers everything you need to know before your appointment and after, so you end up with crisp lines, bold color, and art that lasts a lifetime.
Tattoo Before & AFTER CARE
Why Aftercare MAtters
Your tattoo doesn’t end when you leave the studio. Proper aftercare keeps your lines crisp, your colors vibrant, and helps prevent infections or scarring. Following these steps gives your tattoo the best chance to heal beautifully and last for years.
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

Moisturize daily for at least 3 days before.
-

-
Eat a solid meal before you arrive.
-
Avoid alcohol/blood thinners 24 hours before.
-
Wear comfy clothes that give access to the tattoo area.
-
Bring ID (required by law).
-
Shower before your session for a clean start.
FIRST STEPS FOR
YOUR NEW TATTOO
At your appointment, I’ll apply Recovery Derm Shield (or another professional film) to help seal and protect your tattoo. Recovery Derm acts as a barrier against dirt, bacteria, and abrasion, and promotes a comfortable, hygienic healing process free of scabbing or scarring. You’ll also get clear instructions and an aftercare kit to take home!
HEALING WITH recovery DERM
-
Keep the bandage on for 3–5 days unless it peels or leaks.
-
Showering is okay but avoid soaking it.
-
Fluid buildup is normal! It's just plasma, ink, and blood.
-
Remove gently in the shower under warm water.
-
Wash with mild, fragrance-free soap and pat dry.
-
Apply thin moisturizer after Saniderm is removed.
HEALING WITHOUT Recovery DERM
-
If your derm is punctured, damaged, or leaking, bacteria can get under the skin and become trapped potentially causing infection.
-
Wash with mild, fragrance-free soap 2–3 times daily.
-
Pat dry with a clean paper towel.
-
Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion as needed.
-
No re-bandaging.
-
Keep it clean, dry, and lightly moisturized at all times.
What not to do
-
Don’t pick, scratch, or peel.
-
Don’t use scented lotions, alcohol, or cortisone creams.
-
Don’t re-bandage once Saniderm is off.
-
Don’t soak in baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, or the ocean for at least 2–4 weeks.
-
Don’t expose it to direct sunlight for at least 4 weeks.
Sun & water warnings
-
Sun is your tattoo’s worst enemy during healing! Cover it or use SPF (after it's fully healed).
-
Submerging in water risks infection and fading. Quick showers are fine, but no soaking.
Healing timeline
& expectations
-
Tattoos will scab, peel, and flake—this is normal!
-
Your tattoo might look dull or “hazy” at first.
-
Surface healing takes 2–3 weeks, but deeper layers can take 2–4 months.
-
Consistent moisturizing is key for the best results.
Your investment can last a lifetime!
